Umhausen is located on the second step of the Ötz Valley and surrounds the villages of Tumpen, Östen, Niederthai, Farst and Köfels. The village of Umhausen was formed on the debris cone of the Horlachbach stream and lies between two landslides. A view of Umhausen from the western side of the valley still shows the debris cones of the Lehnbach from the Hirschberg and from the Farstrinne. It is not for nothing that the people of Umhausen are jokingly called "Muerelar" by the other inhabitants of the valley. Coming from Oetz, the "Gstoag" near Tumpen closes the valley for the first time. Behind Umhausen it is the riegel of the Tauferberg. It was formed thousands of years ago when a mountain collapsed near Köfels and piled up on the opposite side of the valley (today's Tauferberg). This dammed the Horlachbach and a large lake was formed. The water gnawed through a rock and the largest waterfall in Tyrol, the Stuibenfall, was created. The rest of the rock is still visible as a "natural arch bridge". Also the remains of the lake are still visible as moraines and the like in Niederthai. Both natural phenomena can be dated around 8000 BC.
